Choosing the Right ONT for Your Home Network

Tutorials · FOT Sales Engineering · 2024-01-20

A guide to understanding different ONT features and selecting the best model for varying residential requirements.

Navigating ONT Options

Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) are the bridge between the ISP's fiber network and the customer's home devices. Selecting the right ONT ensures optimal performance and user satisfaction.

Single-Port vs Multi-Port ONTs

  • Single-Port (1GE): Ideal for basic bridging setups where the customer will connect their own external Wi-Fi router. Very cost-effective.
  • Multi-Port (4GE): Great for homes that require hardwired connections to multiple devices like smart TVs, gaming consoles, and desktop PCs without needing an additional switch.

Wi-Fi 5 vs Wi-Fi 6 Integrated ONTs

Modern ONTs often include built-in Wi-Fi routing capabilities (Residential Gateways).

  • Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac): Sufficient for standard web browsing and HD streaming. More affordable.
  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax): Essential for gigabit-tier plans, homes with many concurrent wireless devices, and low-latency gaming. Offers better range and efficiency.

Voice and CATV Features

  • POTS Ports: If the customer requires traditional landline telephone service over VoIP, look for ONTs with RJ11 FXS ports.
  • CATV RF Port: For operators delivering traditional cable television alongside broadband, an ONT with an RF overlay port is necessary.

By analyzing the specific service package and customer needs, ISPs can deploy the most appropriate FOT ONT model.
